22 Year Wait for the Dúis McCarthy Cup to Come Home to Youghal

From The East Cork Journal.

Youghal Pipe Band has returned victorious from the South of Ireland Pipe Band Championship, held in Mallow Castle last weekend.

On Saturday, 1 June the 26 member group won first place in the Open contest and third in the grade 4B.

The victory was extra special for the Band who won the Danny Dúis McCarthy Memorial Cup for the first time in twenty two years.

There are currently 26 playing members in Youghal Pipe Band, 10 of whom are directly related to Danny Dúis McCarthy who founded the band in 1914.

In 1997 the Memorial Cup was put up by the people of Youghal when the South of Ireland Championship was first held in the town, but the local Pipe Band never held it until last Saturday.

More than 10 bands travelled from as far away as Laois and Newcastle West to play in Mallow for the event.

This is the first of three major championships for the Pipe Band which will conclude with the East of Ireland Pipe Band Championship in Howth later this summer.

Christy McCarthy, Youghal Pipe Band, said the win was “fantastic” which will hopefully set the momentum for the next few months.

The group, he said, is hoping to maintain their winning streak when they compete in the Munster Pipe Band Championship in Cobh on Saturday 22 June.

The Band Mentor said he was delighted that the younger members of the group were able to share in last weekend’s win.

“We had a number of 10, 11 and 12 year olds in the circle last Saturday which is fantastic for the Band, for those training them, and for the young pipers themselves.

“For some of them it was their first competition, but for the majority it was their second time competing.”
