Described as the biggest social event in Ireland for senior citizens, the East Cork heats for this year’s over 60’s competition were launched in the Midleton Park Hotel on Tuesday. The Midleton heat will be held at Midleton GAA on Wednesday 20 February at 8:00pm.
The Youghal heat will take place on Sunday 31 March at 3:00pm in Brú Na Sí following the successful inaugural event in 2018. Great tribute has been paid to both Cannon David Herlihy and Michéal de Butléir who facilitated the event last year. Further details of the Youghal event will follow shortly. The competition is not confined to singers, and the organisers say “if you can play an instrument, dance or tell a funny story” call Charlie on 086-3871549 or Kathleen on 021-4631011.
Established by Paddy O’Brien to help combat loneliness and isolation among the elderly, the competition is now in its forty third year.
Since the event started in 1977 the Over 60s competition has helped raise more than half a million Euro for the Irish Heart Foundation. Mr O’Brien said throughout its history the over 60s show proves that it’s never too late to shine. East Cork has always featured prominently in the over 60s competition. Charlie McAllister from Midleton, who is a competition co-ordinator and Judge, won the competition outright in 2010. Mr McAllister, originally from Dungarvan, has been recognised by Paddy O’Brien as one of the finest winners of the competition he has ever seen. Charlie established the IMP Choir over 30 years ago and is still very active in music. “He doesn’t spare his time, sharing his love of music. He regularly visits the Nursing Homes and hospice in Cork” said Paddy.
This year’s local events are sponsored by the Credit Union. The overall event sponsors are Lennox Hearing Specialist, Evening Echo and Liam Ryan SuperValu.
