Featuring over 25 Transition Year students from the Radio Module in Pobailscoil Na Trionoide in Youghal and set both in the classroom Environment and on location , “Washed Away” is a brand new Radio Documentary that begins by telling the story of how the sea wall on the Lighthouse Hill in Youghal, one of the defining historic features of the town, collapsed – much to the consternation of locals in May 2012. It will then explore how an adjoining section of the wall has, more recently, been declared unstable and how coastal erosion in and around the town has become an issue of growing local concern. The programme also looks at the destruction of Youghal’s Eco Boardwalk a year later and also examines the deteriorating coastline along Redbarn Beach.
With contributions from local eyewitnesses , Historians , Engineering consultants and Environmental experts ,the students will examine the causes and underlying factors that led to the damage while also looking at ways to prevent further damage to Structures around our coastline. , Washed Away brings The Transition Year students from PobailScoil and the listening public on an educational journey highlighting the impact climate change, sea level rise and coastal erosion are having both in Youghal and in other places throughout Ireland and indeed the world.
