The second ever Community Radio Youghal (C.R.Y.) Golf Classic took place at Youghal Golf Club on Thursday 5th June. The proceeds of this year’s event will go towards the purchase of an Outside Broadcast Unit, which will enable the station to get out and about more often and more easily. It will also serve as a Mobile Training Unit.
A total of 29 three person teams played in the Classic, while 82 businesses sponsored tee boxes for the event. Prize sponsors on the day included Mitchelstown Golf Club, Aura Leisure Centre, Aherne’s Seafood Restaurant and Tone and Tan. The fact that Thursday saw the best weather of the year so far, capped what was already a great day and the event proved a huge success.
The Community Radio Youghal Golf Classic saw a very tight finish with Dermot Hogan’s team neck and neck with the Quality Hotel team, both on 61 points. Dermot Hogan’s team of Michael Landers, Dermot Hogan and John O’Regan were deemed the winners on the back six. Accepting his prize on behalf of the team, Michael Landers paid tribute to C.R.Y. for the work that it does and the valuable service it provides to the community.
The Quality Hotel team of Trish Landers, Trish Treacy and Amanda O’Neill Coyne took second place. They were followed, in third place by David Stanton’s team of Albert Ruxton, Clement Ruxton and Tommy Bulman, who had 59 points.
There was a tie for fourth place with both the Old Imperial Hotel and Killeagh GAA finishing on 58 points. On the back six, the Old Imperial were deemed to have edged fourth place. The team consisted of Michael T McCarthy, Dan Dineen and Pat O’Leary.
The Killeagh GAA team of Ray Rochford, John O’Donoghue and Eddie Hayes took fifth place and the final golf prizes. Community Radio Youghal Chairperson, Mervyn Scott presented prizes to the winners, ably assisted by Golf Classic Committee member, Tom Donovan from Knockanore.
The Golf Classic raffle saw local prize winners in Celia Cotter, Kay Curtin, Maura Joyce and Eddie Ryan. A number of visitors to the recent Féile in Youghal also won prizes in the raffle.
Community Radio Youghal Chair, Mervyn Scott thanked Officers and Staff at Youghal Golf Club for all of their support. He had a particular word of thanks for Youghal Golf Club President, Jim O’Connell, who responded with some strong words of support for C.R.Y.
Mervyn Scott also thanked everyone who took part in this wonderful event, especially organisers Noreen Cronin and Mary Murphy.
Congratulations to all and to all who took part on the day. When it came to Golf events, this one was definitely a Classic!
