Cork County Council closes all Playgrounds

As the above matter may receive media and social media commentary, and as different views are expressed on same, I wish to advise that I have this afternoon directed that all of our playgrounds and MUGA’s would be closed. Arrangements are being made for this immediately and, while recognising that not all playgrounds can be closed off physically, appropriate signage will be erected to warn against their use.

Over the weekend, the Department of Health requested that playgrounds would not be closed and, the specific HSE advice to parents on playgrounds includes the following:

“While some playgrounds may be closed, those that are open may still be visited – but it is important to stress that appropriate social distancing, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette measures need to be maintained in all situations.”

However, in the circumstances that now present, and particularly recognising that schools are closed, that weather conditions are improving and that there was significant usage of playgrounds over last weekend, it is prudent to take this step in the interests of public welfare. Members might note that this step is supported by the Councils own independent medical advisor.

Yours sincerely, CEO Cork County Council.
