Cork party-lovers of the 80s and 90s look away now – Gigi’s nightclub in Cork is currently being turned into a pile of rubble, much like a lot of people’s memories of that time.

The famous nightclub which was part of the Hilltop Hotel in Youghal is being bulldozed at the moment with work starting on Monday.

The Hilltop Hotel, which is just 100m from Claycastle Beach, opened its doors in the early 70s and was a thriving business for many years before closing in the early 2000’s.

Gigi’s nightclub opened inside later in the early 80s and became one of the most popular night spots in all of Cork for almost 20 years.

After hearing the news it was being smashed to the ground, locals have been taking to social media to reminisce about the place.

Kevin Cleary said: “Well hopefully they will place an epitaph for the 90’s generation so that they can go on a pilgrimage there to pay their due respects for the fond memories the place gave them in their former younger years.”

Tim O’Shea added: “I Remember getting the busses on Saturday nights from Cork city to Gigi’s in the late 80s early 90s a great spot.”
