Registration is now open for next year’s Ironman Ireland which will take place in Youghal on June 21, 2020.

This year’s inaugural event saw thousands of athletes and fans flock to the Cork town to witness or take part in Ireland’s first Ironman, the ultimate test of endurance which features a swim, run and cycle.

Challenging weather conditions saw the swim cancelled as double Olympic champion, Alistair Brownlee (GBR) took the win in the men’s professional field, with Emma Bilham (SUI) becoming the champion in the women’s professional field.

It was confirmed this week that registration for next year’s event is now open.

“To say the support out on the course was electric and loud is an understatement,” said John Wallnutt, Race Director for Ironman Ireland, Cork.

“The people of Youghal and Cork really came out and showed what Ireland is made of and this in turn made the event the success it was on the day.

“We could not have done it without them,” he added.

“This was one of the best supported inaugural races we have seen on the circuit.

“We can’t wait to see everyone back for 2020.” Next year’s event has also been chosen as the annual “Women For Tri” race in 2020.

The event is aimed at actively increasing female participation in triathlon.

Since its expansion into Europe in 2018, female participation has been steadily rising and this serves as the ideal opportunity to inspire, educate and support women who are actively involved in the sport as well as those who want to start their journey into triathlon.

“Ironman Cork has proven what we knew all along; that the people of Cork are truly remarkable,” said Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan.

“The hospitality, the support and the atmosphere at IRONMAN was absolutely incredible.

“This, together with the visitors and athletes made for an event that was completely extraordinary.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s competition, which I am in no doubt will be even bigger and better.”
