Six time All-Ireland medallist, Fiona O’Driscoll and her business partner, Deirdre Roberts are pedalling their way onto the Youghal cycle scene by launching a new Bike Rental Store.
The pocket rocket, who helped coach the Cork team to win two back to back Camogie wins in the early noughties, is trading her hurley for a saddle in her new adventure, Youghal Bike Hire.
The two friends have opened their shop at 10, South Main Street Youghal, offering 21 gear Ammaco hybrid bicycles for rent.
“The store has a fleet of gents and ladies bikes, as well as boys and girls bicycles for children aged 9 to 15” says co-owner Fiona O’Driscoll.
The Ballymacoda native said they got the inspiration to establish a bike shop following a trip to Spain. “Cycling gives you a great feel for a place. You can stop and start when and wherever you like.”
The former Cork Camogie Coach said Ireland’s first full Ironman series, and the recent announcement of the multi-million Euro development of the Midleton to Youghal Greenway, has led to them opening Youghal’s first Bike rental store.
The pair say that since they opened their door last weekend, they have seen strong demand coming from out of town visitors and those staying at the local caravan parks.
“Youghal’s board walk”, Fiona said, “has opened up the opportunity to safely discover by bike the local beaches, villages, cliff walks and woodlands. Cycling offers you the option to make stops when and where you want to enjoy the beautiful countryside and experience the warm welcome of the local people” commented the Ballymacoda native.
Areas around Youghal, such as the Knockadoon peninsula and Ballycotton, are reachable in a day.
Youghal Bike Hire are also looking to open up many of Youghal’s historic sites to tourists.
Fiona and Deirdre are ‘pedalling’ Youghal’s hidden charms and the untapped potential easily found on the back of a bicycle.
In the oldest gateway into the Country, at what was once the second biggest commercial port in the British Isles, the pair map out many of East Cork’s hidden gems, easily reached by bike.
For hundreds of years people have trekked through the Harbour Town to barter, celebrate marriages and resolve disputes.
Viking traders, Norman settlers, Elizabethan adventurers and Cromwellian soldiers have all played a part in creating a busy and attractive town.
There is no end to the rich history around Sweet Youghal Bay with many gems easy to find on a cycle around the area.
Youghal Bike Hire can be contacted on 087-3301187 or by dropping into the store at 10 South Main Street Youghal.
