Youghal4All’s fundraising efforts for the commission of a sculpture commemorating the filming of Moby Dick in Youghal in 1954, continues in earnest. On Sunday, 29 July from 3pm ’til 5pm, the committee have organised a family friendly afternoon and barbecue on the Mall beach, complete with games and packed with fun4all!! Music will be supplied by D.J. Ger. The cost is €3 a plate and all proceeds will go towards the fund for the sculpture.
The launch of the fundraising campaign was in March 2018 and so far Youghal4All has raised almost €20,000 of the estimated €35,000 needed to complete the project. The tendering process resulted in the project being awarded to Matthew Thompson of Cloyne. His plan for the sculpture is a rendering, in Kilkenny limestone, of Ahab at the brow of a boat, harpoon in hand. Matthew estimates the piece will take a total of 5 months from the first chisel strike to the last- once the limestone is ordered and arrives. The committee have said the sculpture will be completed and in situ at Barry’s Lane before the commencement of the Ironman competition which is coming to Youghal next year. Speaking with The East Cork Journal, PRO of the committee, Sandra McLellan said “We’d like to thank the public for their continued support and hope to see you all on the Mall for the Barbecue, it’s going to be a great afternoon.”
