Cork County Council’s Tourism special purposes committee are to consider sites in Youghal that could open the door to Motor homes.
Councillor Mary Linehan Foley told this week’s East Cork Municipality meeting she wants to see Youghal become as motorhome friendly as Cobh.
Each summer freedom campers take up space along Youghal’s quay side, front strand and lighthouse.
The independent said while the motorhomes are a positive for the area, designated pitches were urgently required.
She said by allocating space at the council site near Aura it would help boost business in the harbour town, especially shops and restaurants.
The former town council had granted planning for a number of motorhomes pitches at clay castle on the recommendation of Failte Ireland.
However when the local authority applied for grant aid from the tourist body, they reduced the amount of financial assistance originally promised, as it did not meet their criteria for motorhomes.
Now Cllr Linehan Foley wants this site developed to accommodate the motorhome enthusiast.
“Last August the hurdy-gurdies went in there for two weeks and it was gritted to allow access. They are parking in car parks in Youghal and they are able to get their own water supplies. They are not asking for much.”
Youghal Municipal officer Helen Mulcahy told the sitting “the amusements provided their own insurance that was heavily indemnified, to cover an accident for the duration of their stay.”
Municipality chairwoman Susan Mccarthy said developing a motorhome site in Youghal was a “no brainer” “We have many tourism spots in East Cork but Youghal is the very obvious one at this stage to have a site for motorhomes.”
A senior council official told the March sitting of the East Cork Municipality the site would cost up to €100,000 to develop.
They said the site was in need of investment by council first as “it is very uneven” and “it’s a bog subject to flooding”.
While another senior official stated “Clay Castle would be amenable to motorhome parking but in the short term may not be achievable”
They suggested other areas be explored that could accommodate the motorhomes at little cost.
