Annual Mass for Sailors and Fishermen Lost At Sea

The annual Mass for sailors and fishermen lost at sea will take place on Saturday, February 21, in Youghal Parish Church at 10 a.m.

In attendance will be:

  • Irish Navy
  • Ballycotton, Helvick and Youghal RNLI
  • Irish Coast Guard Service
  • Representatives of British Merchant Seamen

This year, thanks to Billy Healy, there is an additional list of sailors from the Youghal area who were lost at sea during World War One. The number is 31 and things brings the overall list to 130.

Following the Memorial Mass there will be an opportunity to meet with other sailors and fishermen at the Red Store (upstairs) for tea/coffee and biscuits.

Frank Mills, Maritime Historian, will give a short talk about the loss in 1936 of the schooner Nellie Fleming, lost with all five local crew.

Andy Kelly from Kllmacthomas will display a number of photos of old sailors, fishermen and schooners, in the porch of the church.

This annual Mass is a highlight of the year for all the sea-related families of our area.
