‘Youghal to 2020’
A Heritage-Led Vision to the Next Decade
‘Investing in Heritage’ – A heritage-led regeneration strategy for Youghal was published in 2005. This plan sought to address a number of issues concerning the economic and physical regeneration of the historic centre of the town through measures which were primarily aimed at the protection, conservation and enhancement of the built heritage of the town.
Considering the time that has elapsed since the publication of the existing plan, Cork County Council and the Historic Towns Initiative has initiated the process of the development and drafting of a new Heritage-led Regeneration Plan for Youghal. A Steering Committee comprised of representatives of Cork County Council, Youghal Municipal Heritage Committee, The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group and Daniel Noonan Archaeological Consultancy have been established to oversee this project. The purpose of the new plan is to continue the principles of the 2005 plan as stated above while also acknowledging that ‘place’ has become a key element of the economic proposition for urban regeneration and consolidation.
The new strategy will propose ways in which the physical and non-physical heritage resource of the town can be used as a catalyst in urban regeneration and tourism growth. This document is intended both as a strategic document which contains broad policy recommendations and as an action plan, containing a ‘tool-kit’ which sets out projects and actions to be implemented and reviewed over a period of five years, to 2020.
Interested parties and members of the public are invited to make submissions to be considered by the Steering Committee in the preparation of a draft new Heritage-led regeneration strategy for Youghal; entitled: Youghal to 2020; A Heritage-led Vision to the next decade.
